1. Is ISO 19650 important?
BIM standards have been developing for many years - there are plenty of guidelines, principles and options available for BIM teams.
With so many options, BIM standards became confusing, and many professionals struggle to keep up.
Fear not! The suite of ISO 19650 BIM standards gives the industry a unified approach to information management: the same roles, documents and steps in every country.
So yes - it's important to understand ISO 19650 if you use BIM (Building Information Modeling) on your projects.

2. Ok it's important - so what is ISO 19650?
In plain English: the client (the appointing party) says what information it needs and when, each delivery team plans how it will deliver it, and everyone shares that information the same way, through a common data environment (CDE).
ISO 19650 is a significant step for BIM in our industry, but we need a little more than the standards documents. The UK BIM Alliance has done an amazing job providing free guidance, now the UK BIM Framework (links below).

The standards are sold by ISO and national standards bodies; the UK BIM Framework guidance is free. Parts 1, 2 and 3 are being revised - drafts went out for public comment in 2026 - and the editions below stay in force until the new ones are published (what the proposed revisions change).
